Roof Leak Repair in Northport

Northport is not Tuscaloosa, and its roofs are not Tuscaloosa roofs. Cross the Black Warrior River on the Hwy 82 bridge or the Lurleen Wallace bridges and the housing changes fast: long blocks of 1960s and 1970s brick ranches off 5th Street and Hwy 43, the older frame houses near downtown and the Kentuck side of Main Avenue, then the newer subdivisions strung out along Hwy 69 North toward Lake Tuscaloosa and along Mitt Lary Road. Three different eras of roofing, three different ways to leak.

We are based in Tuscaloosa, ten minutes away, and Northport is the first place we drive most mornings. What the crew sees over there is its own list: river-side humidity that keeps north slopes damp into June, 50-year-old ranch roofs on their second or third layer of shingles, chimneys that were mortared instead of flashed, and new-subdivision valleys that were cut tight and never sealed.

Where Northport roofs leak

The brick ranches are the bread and butter. Low-pitch gable or hip roofs, a brick chimney somewhere near the middle, two or three plumbing vents, a furnace flue, and usually a carport or patio roof that somebody tied in later. On a roof like that the water almost never comes through a shingle. It comes in at a rubber pipe boot that split after fifteen summers over 90 degrees, at step flashing beside the chimney that was mortared instead of counterflashed, or at the seam where the add-on roof meets the main roof at a lower pitch.

On the newer subdivision houses the problem is different. Steep architectural-shingle roofs with a lot of valleys and dormers, built quickly, with builder-grade boots and a lot of sealant where there should have been metal. Those roofs are now 15 to 25 years old. The sealant is gone and the boots are hard as a plastic cup. A hard spring storm with wind-driven rain, which Northport gets every March through May, pushes water under the first weak spot it finds.

In-town frame houses near downtown carry the third set of problems: original valleys, multiple roof layers in places, and chimneys that have been patched more than once. We open those up carefully, because a patch on a patch hides the real entry point.

Neighborhoods and roof ages

If your house is off 5th Street, Bridge Avenue, or in the older grid between Hwy 43 and the river, assume the roof has been replaced at least once and the flashing probably was not. Shingle crews often reuse chimney and wall flashing. That is where we look first.

If you are up Hwy 69 North, on Mitt Lary, Flatwoods Road, or in any subdivision built after the late 1990s, the roof may still be original. A 20-year-old builder roof in this climate is tired. Pipe boots, ridge vent end caps, and the nail line on the exposed ridge are the usual suspects, and they are cheap to fix if you fix them before the decking rots.

If you own rentals in Northport, and plenty of our calls come from landlords and property managers rather than the people living under the leak, we photograph everything, send the report the same day, and bill the owner directly. No need for you to be on site.

What we do for Northport homeowners

Roof leak detection comes first. We go in the attic when there is one, trace the stain back to the entry point, then get on the roof and confirm it, with a hose if the weather has not told us already. You get photos of the actual spot before any repair is priced.

Then the repair: new pipe boots, properly cut step and counterflashing at chimneys and walls, valley rebuilds, skylight reflashing, ridge and vent resealing, and shingle replacement where wind has lifted or torn them. Storm damage roof leak repair after a spring front is a big part of our Northport work; we will also tell you honestly whether what you have is a claim or a $400 fix, because with Alabama wind and hail deductibles running 1 to 5 percent of your dwelling value, most small leaks are an out-of-pocket job and filing would be a mistake.

Emergency tarping is available the same day when the ceiling is actively dripping. We tarp it right, with battens, not a blue sheet and some bricks.

Questions we get

Can a roofer fix a leak without replacing the roof?

Almost always, yes. Most Northport leaks come from a single failed component, a pipe boot, a piece of flashing, a valley, not from the shingles as a whole. We repair the component and leave the rest of the roof alone. We only recommend replacement when the shingles themselves are failing across the roof.

How much does roof leak repair cost in Northport?

Most single-point repairs, a boot, a vent, a short run of flashing, land in a few-hundred-dollar range. Chimney reflashing and valley rebuilds cost more because they take more metal and more time. We price after we find the leak, never before, and you get the photo and the number together.

Is a 15-year-old roof in Northport considered old?

Not old, but at the age where the accessories fail. Rubber boots and sealant do not last fifteen Alabama summers. The shingles may have ten more years in them; the boots do not. That is why we fix the component instead of selling a roof.

Do you come out after a storm the same day?

When the roof is actively leaking, yes, we tarp the same day when at all possible and schedule the permanent repair once it dries out. Send the form and say it is active.
